In the 1880s, some people proposed the establishment of guidelines for skill committees, which would arrange representatives from various aspects to participate in skill symposiums, discuss and handle controversial issues related to data standards, experimental procedures, etc. The first IATM conference was held in Europe in 1882, during which an operational committee was formed. At that time, the primary focus was on discussing experimental methods for processing steel and other materials. In 1902, at the fifth annual meeting of the World Society for Testing Materials, the American Society for Testing Materials declared its official independence. With the continuous expansion and development of its business scope, the operation center of the society is not only to discuss and formulate data standards and experimental method standards, but also includes the characteristics and functional standards of various data, products, systems, service projects, as well as experimental methods, procedures and other standards. In 1961, the arrangement changed its title to the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), which is still in use today.
ASTM is one of the oldest and largest non-profit standard academic communities in the United States. After a century of development, ASTM currently has 33669 individual and collective members, of which 22396 primary committee members serve as skill experts in their respective committees.
